On September 14, 2015, 48-year-old Timothy D. Lawrence, an African American male, was found deceased in his Morgan Park home in Chicago, Illinois. Firefighters responded to a report of an explosion and subsequent fire at Lawrence's residence in the 10800 block of South Morgan Street. Upon extinguishing the blaze, they discovered Lawrence's badly burned body in a back room. Investigations revealed that Willie Bell, a 44-year-old African American male, had discovered that both he and Lawrence were involved with the same woman. This revelation allegedly led Bell to plan and execute the murder. Prosecutors presented evidence that, days before the incident, Bell purchased a reflective workman's vest and a helmet labeled "Meter Inspector" from a Home Depot store. On September 12, 2015, surveillance footage captured Bell, disguised in this attire, approaching Lawrence's home. Lawrence, unaware of Bell's true identity, allowed him entry. Approximately an hour later, Bell was seen leaving the residence with a bandage on his hand, wearing a shirt emblazoned with "I'm that dude," and driving away in Lawrence's 2004 Buick LeSabre.
Further evidence indicated that Bell returned to Lawrence's home on September 14, accompanied by another individual. They were observed carrying gas cans into the house. Shortly after their arrival, the home's surveillance system was disabled, and neighbors reported hearing an explosion, followed by the outbreak of the fire. Investigators later found traces of accelerants throughout the residence and on Lawrence's body, suggesting that the fire was intentionally set to conceal the homicide.
In October 2016, Willie Bell was charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death. During the bond hearing, Cook County Circuit Judge James Brown described Bell's actions as "cold, calculating, and pre-planned," ordering him to be held without bond. Prosecutors highlighted Bell's growing anger over the end of his relationship with the woman both men had been dating, as evidenced by his online postings leading up to the crime.
