Jacob Kyle Morrissey, a 26-year-old white male, died on December 1, 2015, in Rantoul, Illinois. Morrissey was involved in a standoff with the Champaign County Sheriff's Office that ended in his apparent suicide. The standoff began after Morrissey entered a home in St. Joseph and shot its occupants. The Champaign County Coroner, Duane Northrup, confirmed that Morrissey died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred at a residence on the 1200 block of East Clark Street in Rantoul, where Morrissey was found in the attic with a shotgun nearby.
Morrissey had been wanted by police for multiple offenses, including shooting a male occupant of the St. Joseph home in the face, shoulder, and neck areas. The victim was hospitalized as a result of the injuries. Morrissey was also sought in connection with two stolen vehicles, one from the Village Pantry in Georgetown and another from the Lake of the Woods apartments in Mahomet. During the latter incident, Morrissey held two people at gunpoint for over an hour. According to Sheriff Dan Walsh, Morrissey had expressed intentions to kill the man he shot in St. Joseph.
Throughout the standoff, the Metro SWAT team attempted to negotiate with Morrissey for over 10 hours. Despite pleas from close family members and a friend, Morrissey refused to surrender peacefully. The SWAT team eventually released non-lethal chemicals into the attic area, but Morrissey did not comply with commands to surrender. When SWAT team members entered the attic, they found Morrissey's body and determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy was scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
Morrissey's actions and subsequent death were part of a series of violent events that included the shooting in St. Joseph and the car thefts in Georgetown and Mahomet.
