Carla M. Burns, a 49-year-old white female, was reported missing on March 8, 2016, from Harrisburg, Illinois. Carla was a nursing instructor at Southeastern Illinois College and resided in Marion, Illinois. She was last seen leaving her workplace in Harrisburg on the day of her disappearance. Her vehicle was later found parked at her estranged husband's home, raising suspicions about her whereabouts.
The investigation quickly focused on Carla's estranged husband, Dr. Brian Burns, a 56-year-old white male, who was a family practice physician. The couple had a tumultuous relationship, marked by a bitter divorce process that began in December 2015. Carla had filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences and had moved out of their marital home, fearing for her safety. She had also filed a restraining order against Brian, alleging verbal abuse and financial manipulation.
On March 16, 2016, Dr. Brian Burns was arrested by Saline County Sheriff's deputies and charged with first-degree murder. The authorities discovered that Carla had been shot and her body burned. Brian Burns was also charged with concealment of a homicidal death. The motive behind the murder was believed to be financial, as Carla's filing for a separate tax return during their divorce proceedings would have resulted in a significant financial loss for Brian.
The trial revealed that Brian Burns had attempted to cover up the crime by burning Carla's body and spreading her ashes in the woods near their former home.
