On February 20, 2023, Yasmine Moreno, a 26-year-old woman, was found dead with gunshot wounds to her head in a home on the Northwest Side of Chicago. The incident occurred in the Belmont Cragin area, specifically at a residence on the 5500 block of West Diversey.
Police responded to a well-being check call around 12:09 PM after a woman reported that her daughter was not answering the phone and was depressed due to issues with her boyfriend.
Upon entering the apartment, police found Yasmine Moreno unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound and a large pool of blood. It was determined that she had been shot the night before, approximately at 10:59 PM. One shell casing was found at the scene.
The investigation revealed that this incident was related to another incident in the 16th district, where a man identified as Julian Ruiz, 25, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a vehicle on the 6300 block of West Addison. Police determined that both incidents were connected and that Yasmine Moreno and Julian Ruiz were involved in a romantic relationship. The incidents are believed to be domestic in nature.
Julian Ruiz was pronounced deceased at the scene, and his death was ruled as an apparent suicide. The Medical Examiner's office identified Yasmine Moreno as the victim in the homicide case and Julian Ruiz as the victim in the suicide case. The investigation into these incidents was ongoing as of the initial reports.
