On a summer morning in Boston, a burst of gunfire shattered the daylight quiet of Hancock Street in the Dorchester neighborhood. When the tragic echoes faded on July 7, 2016, Brandon Smith, a 28-year-old Black man, lay dead, his life cut short by multiple gunshot wounds. Another woman, in her fifties, was also struck by the gunfire, suffering a non-life-threatening wound to her leg.
