Sheena was fatally shot in the 1900 block of South First Street in Springfield. The incident occurred while she was pregnant, and despite the emergency efforts of NICU doctors at HSHS St. John’s Hospital, her son Shemir survived an emergency C-section. Shemir was born prematurely at 23 weeks, weighing just 1 pound, 8 ounces, and measuring 12 inches long.
He continues to suffer physically from his premature birth but serves as a living reminder of his mother.
Derrick D. Hayes was arrested on June 16, 2017, and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with Sheena Malone's death. Hayes was found guilty of these charges in February 2021. The court sentenced him to 55 years in prison on June 9, 2021. During the trial, it was revealed that Sheena was not the intended target of the shooting, and the incident was not believed to be gang-related, as Hayes had no known gang affiliation.

Sangamon County State's Attorney Dan Wright emphasized the importance of addressing gun violence and ensuring justice for victims like Sheena Malone.
