On the night of July 14, 2017, at approximately 11:14 PM, police officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 40 block of St. Ambrose Drive in Cahokia, Illinois. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of Diondre Demetrius Shanklin, a 23-year-old African American male from East St. Louis, lying in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Diondre had been lured to the location through a deceptive online scheme known as "catfishing."
A fake Facebook profile under the name "Jessica Wells" had been used to entice him with promises of sexual encounters. Unbeknownst to Diondre, this fictitious persona was allegedly created by Christopher A. Nettles, a 23-year-old African American male from Belleville, Illinois, who was the former boyfriend of Diondre's current girlfriend. Authorities believe that Nettles orchestrated this ruse to confront and eliminate Diondre as a romantic rival.
Following the investigation, Christopher Nettles was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Diondre's death. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, which had been activated to assist in the investigation, announced the arrest, noting that Nettles had been taken into custody shortly after the incident.
