Dexter Byrd, a 19-year-old African American male from East St. Louis, Illinois, tragically lost his life on January 28, 2020. On that fateful night, police officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 300 block of Range Lane. Upon arrival, they found Dexter Byrd in the front yard of his residence, suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Dexter succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The investigation into Dexter Byrd's death revealed that the shooting was a targeted attack. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was called in to assist with the investigation. It was determined that the shooting was in retaliation for a previous drive-by shooting at Cahokia Park in February of the previous year. Jamya Moore, a 19-year-old woman, was charged with obstruction of justice for destroying evidence related to the case.
