Nadia Manjarrez, a 21-year-old woman from Chicago, IL, was tragically killed on October 28, 2017. The incident occurred in the Portage Park neighborhood, where she lived. According to reports, Nadia was shot in the head at around 10 p.m. inside a home located in the 4800 block of West Hutchinson. She was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after.
The initial investigation revealed that Nadia was with a 37-year-old man, James Culpepper, at the
time of the shooting. Culpepper called 911 and reported that he had shot his girlfriend. When first responders arrived, they found Nadia lying on a couch with a gunshot wound to her right cheek and a .40-caliber Glock handgun on the living room table. Culpepper was taken into custody for questioning but was released days later without being charged.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy and determined that Nadia died from the gunshot wound. However, the manner of death was not immediately ruled on pending further investigation. On November 19, 2017, the medical examiner's office officially ruled Nadia's death a homicide.
James Culpepper was later charged with first-degree murder in connection with Nadia's death. Prosecutors revealed that Culpepper had a history of violence in his relationship with Nadia, which had escalated prior to the shooting. Witnesses reported hearing the couple arguing on the night of the shooting, and a female voice screaming, "Why are you doing this?" Days before the incident, Culpepper had broken Nadia's phone during an argument, and she had confided in friends that she would hide his gun when he was intoxicated because he had previously threatened her with it.
Culpepper's violent behavior extended beyond his relationship with Nadia. In 2009, he was accused of holding a gun to his then-girlfriend's head and sending her hundreds of threatening text messages. Despite these past incidents, Culpepper was not immediately charged after Nadia's death. It was only five months later, in March 2018, that he was taken into custody again and charged with her murder. He was denied bail and remained in custody as the legal proceedings continued.
