Commander Paul R. Bauer, a 53-year-old white male, was a highly respected member of the Chicago Police Department, serving for over 31 years. On February 13, 2018, while on duty, Bauer was fatally shot in the line of duty. The incident occurred at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago's Loop. Bauer had just attended a training session and was on his way to a meeting at City Hall when he heard a radio call about a suspicious individual, Shomari Legghette, a 44-year-old black male, who had fled
from officers attempting to conduct a field interview.
Bauer spotted Legghette and pursued him into the Thompson Center Plaza. A struggle ensued near the top of the Food Court’s East emergency exit stairs, during which Legghette pulled Bauer down the stairs. Legghette then produced a semi-automatic handgun and fired seven rounds, striking Bauer six times in the head, neck, torso, back, and wrist. Bauer's weapon remained holstered, and his radio and handcuffs were found next to his body. Legghette attempted to escape but was apprehended by responding officers at the top of the staircase.
The murder of Commander Bauer led to significant legal proceedings. Shomari Legghette was charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses. In March 2020, after a trial that included testimonies and evidence, Legghette was found guilty on all counts. The trial highlighted the brutal nature of the crime and the impact on Bauer's family and colleagues. Legghette was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His appeals, which included claims of procedural errors and requests for new defense attorneys, were rejected by the appellate court in November 2023, upholding his conviction and life sentence.
