Stephen Ohr, a 34-year-old man, was tragically killed on April 11, 2018, in his Avondale neighborhood home in Chicago, Illinois. Stephen, who was of South Korean descent and adopted by Roger Ohr and Carolyn Hawk, was shot multiple times in the head. The incident occurred shortly after midnight in the apartment he shared with a 25-year-old woman. According to reports, Stephen was in his bedroom with Jesus Gonzalez-Silva, a 33-year-old man from Milwaukee, who had come to visit him and the woman
the day before. The woman, who was in the living room with another witness, heard gunshots and ran to the bedroom, where she found the door blocked. When she managed to push it open, she saw Gonzalez-Silva standing over Stephen, who was bleeding from his head.
Gonzalez-Silva then pointed a gun at the woman and fired twice, but missed. The other witness fled the apartment and called the police. The woman ran to a bathroom and locked herself inside, but Gonzalez-Silva kicked in the door and fired again, missing her once more. She pleaded for her life, and Gonzalez-Silva eventually left the apartment, taking a lockbox and Stephen's cellphone. Stephen was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation led to the arrest of Jesus Gonzalez-Silva by U.S. Marshals on April 19, 2018. He was charged with first-degree murder and brought back to Chicago to face trial. During his arrest, authorities recovered a lockbox similar to the one taken from Stephen's room and a 9mm handgun. Gonzalez-Silva was held without bail, and the case proceeded through the legal system.
