Neighbors expressed shock and sorrow over the event, describing the couple as "very, very nice, good neighbors." Jose had an extensive background, having lived in Spain, France, and Canada before settling in the neighborhood approximately 12 years prior. He worked as a translator at the Iroquois County Courthouse. The couple was known to be friendly and engaging within the community.
