Raymond Figgers, a 42-year-old African American man, was fatally shot on July 27, 2018, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred on the sidewalk in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago. Figgers was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his head around 11:30 p.m. in the first block of South Campbell Avenue. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect in the case, Leanthy Sims, a 37-year-old man from the Lawndale neighborhood, was charged with
first-degree murder. According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Sims confronted Figgers in front of a Salvation Army Community Center, accusing him of having an affair with his wife. During the argument, Sims pulled out a gun and shot Figgers in the hand and then in the head. The shooting was captured by video surveillance cameras, and a witness confirmed the confrontation and shooting.
Sims fled the scene in his car but was later taken into custody without incident. Officers recovered a single shell casing at the scene and found a second casing inside Sims' car. Preliminary testing confirmed that both casings were fired by the same gun. Sims was held without bail, and his next hearing was scheduled for August 20, 2018.
