Black/African American male Steven A. Lares, age 38, was killed late on Friday, June 13, 2025, on Chicago's West Side. Shortly before midnight, he sat in a car in the 100 block of North Laramie Avenue in the Austin neighborhood when someone walked up and opened fire, striking him in the head. He was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the gunman approached the vehicle on foot and shot both men inside before fleeing.
The other victim, later identified by the Cook County medical examiner as 48-year-old Terrell Devon Wyatt, also died after being taken to Stroger. The attack happened around 11:41 p.m., a detail repeated by multiple outlets as investigators canvassed the block for evidence and witnesses through the night.
Authorities reported no arrests in the immediate aftermath. As of the weekend that followed, no one was in custody, and Area 4 detectives continued to investigate the double homicide, appealing for information while the community marked Lares's death alongside other gun violence victims recorded that day.
