Sarah Donohue, a 36-year-old woman from Kentucky, was tragically shot and killed on June 29, 2020, at the Esquire Motel in Norwood Park, Chicago. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when Sarah was inside a motel room with a 64-year-old man. According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, she died at the scene from a gunshot wound to her head, and her death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was part of a robbery and botched drug deal.
Glen Humes, the alleged getaway driver, was charged with first-degree murder and robbery in connection with Sarah Donohue's death. Humes had set up the drug deal and robbery that led to Sarah being shot in the back of the head. On the morning of the incident, Humes arrived at the motel and spent time in the room with Sarah and the 64-year-old man, discussing a drug sale. Two hours later, two men who knew Humes showed up outside the motel and knocked on the room door. As Sarah was cutting up crack on a table and counting money, the 64-year-old man looked outside and did not recognize the person knocking. Humes assured him that the man must be with him, so he let him in.
Once inside, the man who had knocked pulled out a gun and demanded everything from Sarah. Sarah tried to grab the gun, but the gunman pulled away and shot her once in the back of the head, killing her. Humes and the gunman then took $800 hidden under the mattress, the drugs on the table, and Sarah's cellphone before leaving in a car driven by Humes. Investigators were able to identify Humes' license plate number from surveillance video and track his cellphone movements. The 64-year-old man also identified Humes in a photo lineup.
Humes, who was free on bond for a pending drug case, was arrested after he drove away from officers and crashed into an undercover police car. During a foot chase, officers allegedly saw Humes ingest a plastic bag of suspected drugs. He was taken to a hospital for treatment following his arrest. Judge Mary Marubio ordered Humes held without bail for first-degree murder and robbery. He was expected back in court on September 11, 2020.
