Noe Mondragon-Jimenez, a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot on July 2, 2020, in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. while Mondragon-Jimenez was walking with his girlfriend in the 4100 block of West 27th Street. As they walked, a dark-colored vehicle approached, and two males exited the car, each armed with handguns equipped with laser sights.
The assailants, identified as David Guillen, 16, and a 15-year-old boy, opened fire on Mondragon-Jimenez, striking him 19 times. Mondragon-Jimenez collapsed to the ground and was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Mondragon-Jimenez's girlfriend, who is also a minor, recognized both suspects as former summer school classmates at Corkery Elementary School. She identified them in a photo array, and her account was corroborated by two other witnesses. The suspects were later arrested at their homes and charged with first-degree murder. Guillen was charged as an adult and held without bail, while the 15-year-old was charged as a juvenile.
The shooting was believed to be gang-related, as Mondragon-Jimenez was a reputed member of the Two-Six street gang, and the suspects were thought to be affiliated with the rival Latin Kings. The incident was captured on a police POD camera, and additional evidence was gathered from private and city video surveillance, as well as eyewitness accounts. Eight 9 mm shell casings were recovered from the scene, and police ShotSpotter boxes recorded shots being fired from two separate guns.
The case highlighted the ongoing gang violence in Chicago, particularly in the Little Village neighborhood, which has a long history of gang-related conflicts. The shooting occurred just before the violent July 4 holiday weekend, during which at least 80 people were shot, 17 of them fatally, across the city.
