On June 20, 2015, James Jones, a 21-year-old African American man, was fatally shot while shielding his mother from gunfire in Chicago's South Side. The incident occurred around noon as James and his 46-year-old mother, Alicia Jones, sat on the front porch of a home in the 8400 block of South Colfax Avenue.
