Nautica Thompson, a 23-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 1, 2020, in Chicago, IL. The incident occurred during a backyard party in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. At approximately 12:37 a.m., gunfire erupted, resulting in multiple injuries and the death of Thompson. He was shot multiple times and was transported to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy confirmed that Thompson died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The chaotic scene left four other individuals injured. A 32-year-old man was shot in the left thigh, an 18-year-old man was hit in the left forearm and abdomen, an 18-year-old woman was shot three times in the buttocks, and a 28-year-old woman was struck in the left leg. All the injured were taken to nearby hospitals and were reported to be in good condition.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police officers in the vicinity heard the gunshots and quickly responded to the scene. They detained two males who were attempting to flee. One of the suspects, 25-year-old Latraye Williams, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault to a peace officer for allegedly pointing a gun at officers during his escape. Williams, who resides in the Austin neighborhood, was held without bail at the Cook County Jail. His next court date was scheduled for August 10, 2020. Charges against the second individual were still pending at the time.
