Steven Garcia, a 38-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot on September 6, 2020, at a BP gas station located at 39th Street and Archer Avenue in Brighton Park, Chicago. The incident occurred over Labor Day weekend. Garcia and his wife had initially attempted to enter the gas station to purchase a snack but were turned away for not wearing face masks.
Garcia then took off his shirt so his wife could use it as a face covering and waited outside while she went back into the store.
Eduardo Pena, 40, was charged with the murder of Steven Garcia. Pena, along with his wife and two other men, were sitting in an SUV across the street from the gas station. The two men, identified as "old Satan’s Disciples," approached Garcia after noticing his tattoos and questioned him about gang affiliation. One of the men punched Garcia multiple times in the face, causing him to flee down the street. Pena then got out of the SUV and chased Garcia back to the gas station, where he shot Garcia in the back with a large-caliber handgun. The shooting was captured on surveillance cameras.
Garcia was pronounced dead at St. Anthony Hospital. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide. Pena and his accomplices attempted to flee the scene in the SUV, but were stopped by police shortly after because Pena's wife forgot to turn on the headlights. All four individuals denied hearing gunshots and were initially released with a warning after their names were checked.
The investigation into Garcia's murder is ongoing, with Area One detectives handling the case. No additional arrests have been reported, and the case remains under investigation.
