Earnest James, a 21-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on September 27, 2020, in East Garfield Park, Chicago. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when Earnest was on the sidewalk in the 600 block of North Sawyer Avenue. A gray sedan approached, and someone inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Earnest in the chest. He was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.
