Fernando Carapia-Ruiz, a 32-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on January 15, 2021, in Aurora, Illinois. Fernando was in the backyard of his home when he was fatally shot multiple times. The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. when a vehicle driven by Ivan Valles stopped in the 300 block of South Himan Street. Daniel Aguirre, who was 22 years old at the time, exited the vehicle, ran through a yard to the back of a residence, and fired multiple shots at Fernando, who died at
the scene from his injuries.
The investigation revealed that the murder was gang-motivated, although Fernando Carapia-Ruiz was not a gang member and was not the intended target. Authorities believe that Daniel Aguirre intended to kill a rival gang member but mistakenly shot Fernando instead. This senseless act of violence left Fernando's family devastated, particularly as he was a beloved husband and father who was tragically taken before he could meet his second son.
Following the incident, Daniel Aguirre was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. In April 2023, a jury found Aguirre guilty of the offense, and he was subsequently sentenced to 75 years in prison. The sentence included a mandatory 25-year enhancement because Aguirre personally fired the gun that killed Fernando. During the sentencing hearing, Fernando's wife and brother-in-law spoke about the profound pain and anguish they felt from his absence, hoping their words would impact Aguirre.
