Lavelle R. Lee, a 32-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on January 16, 2021, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, specifically in the 9200 block of South Blackstone Avenue. Lavelle Lee and his 31-year-old cousin were approached by Christopher Luckett, a 41-year-old man, who allegedly opened fire with a 9-mm handgun.
Lavelle Lee was struck multiple times and succumbed to his injuries, while his cousin was also hit but managed to survive by hiding in nearby bushes until help arrived.
The investigation revealed that Luckett had been getting his car serviced at a mechanic's garage when he noticed Lee and his cousin parking their cars nearby. After inquiring about their identities, Luckett approached them, leading to the fatal confrontation. The mechanic, who had gone into his basement to put away tools, did not witness the shooting but heard the gunshots and saw Luckett driving away afterward.
Following the incident, a warrant was issued for Luckett's arrest, and he was eventually apprehended in Mississippi. During his arrest, Luckett attempted to escape multiple times, but law enforcement managed to detain him. A 9-mm handgun was found in the home where Luckett was captured, though tests to confirm if it matched the bullet casings from the crime scene were still pending at the time.
Luckett was extradited to Cook County, Illinois, where he faced charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder. He was held on a $1 million bail and was expected to appear in court on April 1, 2021.
