On January 18, 2021, 35-year-old Jose C. Pacheco, a Hispanic male from Danville, Illinois, was tragically shot and killed. The incident occurred around 9:16 p.m. in the 400 block of Avenue A, where officers responded to a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found Pacheco with a gunshot wound to his back, lying in a yard outside. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Pacheco's death led to the indictment
of Christopher Echols by a Vermilion County Grand Jury on September 16, 2021. Echols was formally charged with first-degree murder and was apprehended in Joplin, Missouri, shortly after the indictment. However, during the preparation for trial, new evidence emerged that cast doubt on Echols' involvement in the crime. This new, credible, and material evidence prompted the prosecution to dismiss the charges against Echols in April 2023.
Despite the dismissal of charges, the case remains under investigation by the Danville Police Department and the Vermilion County State's Attorney's Office.
