Alva E. Al Besst, a 68-year-old lifelong resident of Bridgeport, Chicago, was tragically killed by a stray bullet on February 16, 2021. Besst, who was active in his community and a member of the First Trinity Lutheran Church, was driving near Halsted and 31st Street when he was struck in the head by gunfire intended for someone else. The bullet penetrated the rear window of his car, causing him to crash into a snow pile.
He was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Following the incident, the Chicago Police Department launched an investigation to find the perpetrators. On March 13, 2021, Gerardo Campos, a 26-year-old man from Cicero, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Besst's death. Campos was identified as the gunman who fired the shots that killed Besst. He was arrested in Cicero and was due to appear in bond court shortly after his arrest.
The community mourned the loss of Besst, who was remembered as a kind and active member of his neighborhood. Alderman Patrick Thompson expressed his condolences and thanked neighbors for their cooperation with the police during the investigation. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in the area and the impact it has on families and communities.
Besst's death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner's office. The investigation continued as authorities worked tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
