Eddy N. Vaughns, a 33-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on November 2, 2019, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. Vaughns was involved in a physical altercation with an unknown individual at a business located in the 10900 block of South Vernon Avenue. The altercation escalated, and Vaughns was shot in the chest.
He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Cook County medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy and determined that Vaughns died from multiple gunshot wounds, ruling his death a homicide.
The investigation into Vaughns' death revealed that he had been in a verbal argument with Brian Wyatt, a 36-year-old African American male, at a convenience store in the 400 block of East 111th Street earlier that day. Surveillance footage showed Wyatt, wearing a distinctive multicolored hoodie, initiating the quarrel around 3:15 p.m. The argument continued as the two men, who had been friends for about 20 years, walked back to Vaughns' home. The confrontation became physical on the sidewalk in front of Vaughns' residence. As Vaughns approached his front door, Wyatt followed him and allegedly shot him twice, striking him in the jaw and chest while the gun was still in his jacket pocket.
After the shooting, Wyatt initially left Vaughns on the steps of his home but later returned to try and help him up. Wyatt then misled police by claiming that he thought the shots had been fired by someone else. He called someone to pick him up at a nearby intersection and later admitted to the shooting. Wyatt's cell phone data placed him at the scene of the crime, and he was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. In February 2022, Wyatt was denied bail as he faced prosecution for the murder of his longtime friend, Eddy N. Vaughns. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of a long-standing friendship turned violent and the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago.
