On February 19, 2021, 30-year-old Mykel James Curry was found deceased in a vehicle near Lincoln Middle School in Rockford, Illinois. The vehicle had come to rest in front of the school, prompting a brief lockdown of both Lincoln Middle School and East High School as a precautionary measure. The Winnebago County Coroner's Office confirmed that Curry had died from a gunshot wound.
Born on April 17, 1990, in Rockford, Mykel was the son of James Curry and Shannon Curry, and the special son of Anthony Young. He attended Jefferson High School and Youth Build, later working at the Northwest Community Center. Mykel was known for being protective of his loved ones, having a generous spirit, and his talent as a rap artist. He accepted Christ at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his grandmother, parents, two children—Cyarah Mykia and Allie Rose—and several siblings.
As of now, there have been no public reports of arrests or identified suspects in connection with the death of Mykel Curry. The Rockford Police Department continues to investigate the case.
