Bobby King, a 31-year-old African American male from Peoria, Illinois, tragically lost his life on February 27, 2021. The incident occurred following a verbal altercation between King and Odis Jackson, a 28-year-old man. The confrontation escalated, resulting in Jackson shooting King in a parked car at the intersection of East Ravine Avenue and North Peoria Avenue. King was found with a gunshot wound around 5:15 p.m. on that fateful Saturday.
Following the shooting, Jackson fled the scene, leading to a tense standoff with the police. The Peoria Special Response Team and the Central Illinois Emergency Response Team were called in to negotiate Jackson's surrender. After nearly five hours of negotiations, Jackson was taken into custody at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. King was pronounced brain dead at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
Jackson faced charges of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He pled not guilty to the charges on March 11, 2021, and his trial date was set for May 3, 2021. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Peoria, as King became the city's fifth homicide victim of the year.
