Martez S. Robertson, a 19-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on September 20, 2021, in Peoria, Illinois. Martez was fatally shot at the Stop 'n' Save convenience store located at 800 NE Jefferson Ave. The incident occurred around 6 p.m., and the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alerted authorities to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found Martez unresponsive inside the store, having suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body. He was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m. by the Peoria County Coroner.

Martez's death marked the 23rd homicide in Peoria for the year 2021. Despite the efforts of the Peoria Police Department, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. Several individuals have been identified as "persons of interest," but no charges have been filed. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to seek information and leads.

Martez was born in Peoria but spent much of his childhood in Kansas City, Missouri, and later in Arlington, Texas, where his father had relocated for work. He returned to Peoria a few years before his death to be closer to his mother's side of the family. Martez was known for his serious demeanor, but those who knew him well described him as kind-hearted and loving. He was a good student, played basketball, and had a passion for sports. His family, including his stepmother Future Robertson and his father Marlon Robertson, expressed their deep grief and disbelief over his untimely death.

The community held a vigil in Martez's honor at the Stop 'n' Save, where over 100 people gathered to mourn and remember him. The vigil featured prayers, speeches, and the release of balloons. Martez leaves behind a two-year-old son, Amari, who will grow up without his father's presence. The family continues to seek justice for Martez and hopes that those responsible for his death will be brought to justice.
