On August 31, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in the 800 block of Helen Street in South Peoria, Illinois. The victim, identified by Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood, was 19-year-old Damar Watts of Peoria. Watts was found deceased inside a house when police officers arrived at the scene around 10:20 a.m..
Damar Antwon Dwayne Watts, born on July 11, 2004, was a recent graduate of Manuel High School and had been employed at various places, including McDonald’s and the maintenance department of Paradise Hotel. He was known affectionately as “Dooder” and “Don Dada” by his loved ones. Watts was deeply connected to his family and community, often participating in family gatherings and finding solace in video games. He is survived by his father, Darrell Watts, several siblings, and a large extended family.
The shooting that resulted in Watts' death was part of a surge in gun violence in the area. It was the city's 19th homicide of 2023 and occurred shortly after other violent incidents in the vicinity, including shootings on Antoinette Street and West Marquette. Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria expressed concern over the escalating violence, describing it as a "war on the streets" and emphasizing the need for community involvement and cooperation to prevent further incidents.
Following an investigation, on July 2, 2024, Peoria police arrested 24-year-old Rashaard Nunn in connection with Watts' murder. Nunn was taken into custody after a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 1400 block of West Glen Avenue. During the search, officers seized illegal drugs, drug equipment, and large amounts of money. Nunn was charged with first-degree murder, along with several other drug-related offenses, and was transported to the Peoria County Jail.
