Cael Thornton, an 8-year-old African American boy, tragically lost his life on September 29, 2022, in West Peoria, Illinois. Cael was found shot to death alongside his mother, Quadreka S. Payne, in their home. The incident was a result of a violent altercation between Quadreka and her husband, Rickey J. Payne, who was Cael's stepfather. The altercation began with a heated argument that escalated into physical violence. Rickey struck Quadreka multiple times, fracturing bones in her face, before shooting her three times, including shots to her face and neck. Despite her injuries, Quadreka was still alive and breathing after being shot, as evidenced by blood in her lungs. Cael, who was upstairs with his 15-month-old twin siblings, was shot twice in the head by Rickey. The twins were unharmed during the incident.
Rickey J. Payne, 35, was arrested and charged with six counts of first-degree murder, three for Quadreka and three for Cael. He initially denied involvement but later admitted to the shootings, claiming the altercation began over late-night messages Quadreka received. Rickey stated that Quadreka had a gun, which she put away before he pulled out his own gun. In the struggle that ensued, Rickey overpowered Quadreka and shot her. He then shot Cael because the boy kept coming downstairs to investigate the noise, preventing Rickey from cleaning up the scene. Rickey attempted to stage the scene to look like a break-in and called 911, claiming he was locked outside the house.
The case went to trial, and on February 7, 2024, Rickey J. Payne was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder. The jury took about two and a half hours to reach a verdict. During the trial, it was revealed that Rickey had a history of domestic abuse, and Quadreka had expressed fear for her safety in messages to her brother. Rickey was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as Illinois law mandates a life sentence for individuals convicted of multiple murders. The sentencing hearing was emotionally charged, with family members of Quadreka and Cael expressing their grief and the profound impact the murders had on their lives.
