Dakawn Louis Scott, a 22-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on May 12, 2021, in Muncie, Indiana. The incident occurred near the intersection of Fifth and Hackley streets, where Scott was fatally shot. According to reports, he suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. On May 26, 2021, Gabriel Elijah Paul Taylor, a 21-year-old male, was arrested in connection with the murder of Dakawn Louis Scott. Taylor was charged with murder and was held without bond in the Delaware County jail. According to a probable cause affidavit, witnesses reported that Taylor had attempted to take Scott's firearm, leading to a confrontation where both men drew their weapons and exchanged gunfire. Surveillance footage captured the sound of numerous gunshots, and police recovered 19 shell casings from the scene. Taylor, who had a prior criminal record, was also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
The investigation revealed that Taylor had been moving between Indianapolis and Muncie, staying in motels to avoid capture. A woman who was with Taylor at the time of his arrest stated that Taylor had claimed he acted in self-defense after Scott allegedly gave him a threatening look and pulled his gun.
