On June 18, 2023, a devastating shooting occurred in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of two men, including 32-year-old Brian Ross. The incident took place during a large Father's Day gathering at Smith Park, located in the 9900 block of South Princeton Avenue. The gathering was part of a decades-long neighborhood event where approximately 200 people had assembled to grill, enjoy music, and spend time with friends and family.
Brian Ross, a father of four, was shot in the neck when a gray Honda sedan pulled up alongside the gathering, and individuals inside the vehicle opened fire. Ross was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting also claimed the life of 38-year-old Robert Barnes, who was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to the two fatalities, three other men were wounded in the shooting: a 27-year-old man shot in the buttocks and shoulder, a 25-year-old man shot in the torso, and a 19-year-old man struck in both legs. All the wounded were taken to local hospitals, with the 27-year-old listed in critical condition and the others in fair condition.
According to eyewitness accounts, including Ross's wife Kandace, the shooters did not seem to care about the presence of children, women, and other innocent bystanders. Kandace Ross described the scene, stating that the shooters "just came and just shot it up just so they can, I don't know, brag about it.".
The Chicago Police Department is investigating the incident, with Interim Superintendent Fred Waller noting that the shooting may have been linked to conflicts between groups and that social media might have played a role in drawing the shooters to the park. As of the current reports, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
