On November 4, 2024, Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez, aged 26, was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue, near 80th and Ingleside in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood. Officer Martinez and his partner were interacting with the driver of a vehicle that was blocking traffic. When they noticed the passenger reaching for a bag on the floor, they gave multiple instructions to stop, but the passenger, later identified as Darion McMillian, 23,
pulled out a fully automatic handgun with an extended magazine and discharged a barrage of gunfire. Officer Martinez was struck multiple times, and the driver was also hit multiple times. The shooter then pushed the driver out of the vehicle and attempted to drive away, dragging another officer who tried to intervene before crashing into a parked car and fleeing on foot.
McMillian, who was on electronic monitoring at the time and had a previous felony conviction, was apprehended 10 minutes later after running into an apartment and cutting off his electronic monitoring device. He was charged with multiple felonies, including first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted murder of a police officer, burglary, possession of a machine gun, and possession of a gun as a felon.
Officer Martinez was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he succumbed to his wounds. The driver of the vehicle also died at the scene. A third person in the back of the vehicle was arrested but later released without being charged.
Enrique Martinez had served with the Chicago Police Department for almost three years, assigned to the 6th District. He was recently engaged to his girlfriend, Lesly Hernandez, whom he had dated for 10 years. Martinez followed in his older brother Adrian's footsteps in becoming a police officer, and his brother also serves with the Chicago Police Department.
The community and law enforcement gathered to honor Officer Martinez. A visitation was held at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, followed by a funeral service at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel on November 18, 2024. Hundreds attended the services, including family, friends, and fellow officers. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson did not attend the funeral at the family's request.
In honor of Officer Martinez, Governor JB Pritzker ordered all state and U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff from November 14 to November 18, 2024. The incident has highlighted concerns about public safety and the need for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies, with Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez and others calling for more action from state and federal authorities.
