Black male Deandre Abrams, 26, was shot and killed on July 8, 2021, in the Wentworth Gardens housing complex on Chicago's South Side. Around 2:15 p.m., as he stood with another man outside a residence in the 3900 block of South Princeton Avenue, a vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire.
The 26 year old was struck in the face, and, according to one account, in the back, and was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The second victim, a 35 year old man, was shot in the leg and taken to the same hospital in good condition. The Cook County medical examiner identified the slain man as Deandre Abrams.
Police said the gunman fired from the passing vehicle and fled. In the immediate aftermath, no one was in custody, and Area One detectives opened an investigation; authorities did not release a suspect description in those early reports.
The killing unfolded amid mounting concern about violence in and around Wentworth Gardens, a Chicago Housing Authority complex just south of Guaranteed Rate Field. The next day, local officials publicly pressed for stronger security measures and surveillance in the area, underscoring the fear and frustration gripping residents as the case remained without an announced arrest.
