Tyran Williams, a 34-year-old resident of Chicago, was fatally shot on March 15, 2024, in the Beverly neighborhood. The incident occurred in an alley behind his restaurant, Gusto's Kitchen, located at 1767 W. 95th St., near Wood Street. According to reports, Williams was approached by a suspect in a blue vehicle, and someone inside the vehicle began firing shots. Williams was struck multiple times and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
At the time of his death, Williams was awaiting trial for his involvement in a shooting at the Oak Brook Mall on December 23, 2021. In that incident, Williams and another man, Steve Lane, were involved in a shootout that injured four innocent bystanders. Williams himself was shot four times during the altercation. He was charged with five counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Despite being on electronic monitoring and having strict conditions for his release, Williams had been granted expanded movement permissions by DuPage County Judge John Kinsella.
Williams had recently opened Gusto's Kitchen in September 2023, a venture he undertook to create generational wealth for his children. The restaurant was named after his godmother's brother, who had also been a victim of gun violence. Williams was a father of three boys and one girl, and his family described him as a passionate chef who had turned his life around to pursue his culinary dreams.
The shooting that killed Williams was described as a "targeted" incident by Ald. Matt O’Shea, and it briefly placed nearby Vanderpoel Humanities Academy on lockdown. As of the latest reports, no one is in custody for Williams' murder, and the Chicago Police Department is seeking information and private security video to aid in their investigation.
