Officer Ella French, a 29-year-old female police officer from Chicago, IL, was tragically killed on August 7, 2021, during a routine traffic stop on the city's South Side. The brothers were in a vehicle that had been stopped by French and Yanez when the gunfire erupted. Additionally, Jamel Danzy, 29, was charged with purchasing and illegally supplying the semi-automatic handgun used in the shooting. Danzy, from Hammond, Indiana, was accused of buying the weapon from a licensed gun dealer and providing it to an Illinois resident who was prohibited from owning firearms due to a felony conviction.
The legal proceedings following Officer French's death were extensive. Emonte Morgan was found guilty of first-degree murder for the shooting of Officer French and attempted first-degree murder for wounding Officer Yanez. He was sentenced to two life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, along with additional sentences for other charges. Eric Morgan took a plea deal and was sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in the incident.
