The investigation into Sergio Ochoa's death revealed that the shooting was gang-related. Ochoa was identified as a member of the Latin Kings gang. On the night of the incident, an altercation occurred between the occupants of two vehicles, a Chevy Tahoe and a Dodge Magnum, in the 3200 block of North Sheffield. The confrontation escalated as the vehicles sped south, with shots being fired from the Dodge Magnum, ultimately hitting Ochoa. The driver of the Tahoe, who was uncooperative with the police, drove Ochoa to the hospital.
Federal prosecutors later charged three men with Ochoa's murder. Juan Alcaraz, 23, Victor Ramirez, 24, and Cameron Callison, 24, were accused of killing Ochoa to maintain and increase their positions within the Ambrose street gang. The charges included murder in aid of racketeering, a crime that carries a mandatory life sentence and could result in the death penalty. Callison also faced charges for illegally possessing a handgun. All three men had significant criminal histories and were arrested separately for firearms violations in the weeks following the murder.
