On November 5, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including Peter Jennings, 47, and Lamont Johnson, 51. The victims were employees of Levy Restaurants, a company that operates at Navy Pier.
The shooting took place around 1:15 p.m. on the north side of Navy Pier, specifically in an administrative office in the loading dock area. According to police, a disgruntled former co-worker, later identified as Raylon East, 36, entered the area and opened fire, shooting both Johnson and Jennings in the head. The victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
Raylon East, the suspected shooter, had been fired from his position as a cook at Levy Restaurants weeks prior to the incident. On the day of the shooting, East left his South Side home, dressed in his cook's uniform, and used public transportation to travel to Navy Pier. This attire allowed him to blend in and gain access to the restricted area. Once inside, he confronted his former co-workers and committed the fatal shootings.
Following the incident, East allegedly threw the weapon used in the murders into the lake and then fled the scene using public transportation. Chicago Police Department divers later recovered the weapon. An exhaustive search was launched, and by Thursday, November 7, 2024, police had taken East into custody as a person of interest in the double homicide.
