On September 30, 2021, Jonathon McPhearson, a 17-year-old African American male from Champaign, Illinois, was tragically shot and killed. The incident occurred while Jonathon was sitting alongside Kirby Avenue near the International Prep Academy. According to the Champaign Police Department, multiple masked suspects approached Jonathon and another individual who was with him and opened fire.
