Illinois State Police and first responders converged on the scene around 3:20–3:21 p.m., and the 35-year-old male was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
All northbound lanes were closed from 167th Street for hours as
investigators combed the roadway; the shutdown stretched into the evening before lanes reopened.
In those first hours, information was sparse.
Reports noted only that a 35-year-old male had been critically wounded on I-57 near 159th Street and later died at the hospital, while troopers sealed off the corridor to preserve evidence and search for shell casings and any fragments that the traffic hadn't already scattered.

Weeks later, a breakthrough came. On January 27, 2022, the Cook County State's Attorney charged 31-year-old Antione K. Scott with first-degree murder in the December 19 I-57 killing of the 35-year-old Robert A. Braboy.
Illinois State Police said Scott had already been in custody on an unrelated matter and was ordered held without bond. Investigators with ISP's Division of Criminal Investigation identified him as the suspect following an extensive probe that drew on enhanced expressway enforcement measures and forensic follow-up.
State police later summarized the case publicly among a slate of expressway shooting arrests, noting the charge against Antione K. Scott for the December 19 homicide of a 35-year-old man on I-57 near 159th Street.
As of that announcement, authorities had not detailed a motive in the killing of Robert A. Braboy, the 35-year-old African American male, and asked anyone with information to come forward.
