Timothy Vallianatos, a 56-year-old man from Chicago, IL, was found dead in his South Loop apartment on January 4, 2022. The investigation revealed
that Vallianatos had been involved in a drug transaction with Chrystal Martin, a 28-year-old woman, and her accomplice, Elbert Williams III, a 35-year-old man. Surveillance footage showed Martin and Williams entering Vallianatos' building shortly before the murder. During the transaction, a physical altercation ensued, leading to Vallianatos' death. Witnesses reported hearing a woman screaming about money and Vallianatos pleading that he had credit cards. The altercation escalated, with one witness hearing the woman say, "put him to sleep," followed by the sound of choking.
Chrystal Martin and Elbert Williams III were arrested less than two weeks after the murder. Initially, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office declined to file charges based on their self-defense claims. However, further investigation and witness testimonies led to Martin being charged with first-degree murder. Williams, who had initially evaded arrest, later turned himself in and also faced a first-degree murder charge. Both suspects were held in custody, with Martin's bond set at $300,000.
