Leon Allen, 66, a Black/African American male from Chicago, was walking along the 4600 block of West Van Buren Street in West Garfield Park on the morning of October 19, 2021, when a white van pulled up and someone inside opened fire. He was struck and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Initial police summaries reported his age, the location, the time—about 7:50 a.m.—and the detail of the white van, but did not immediately release his name.
