Melissa was walking with her mother in the Little Village neighborhood when a gunman emerged from a nearby alley and opened fire. The intended target was a 26-year-old gang member, but Melissa was struck twice in the head by stray bullets. The incident occurred around 2:55 p.m. on 26th Street near Pulaski Road.
Melissa and her mother had recently moved to Chicago from Mexico in search of the American Dream, only to be met with this devastating tragedy.
The investigation into Melissa's death led to the arrest of two individuals. A 16-year-old boy, identified as the shooter, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm in an occupied vehicle. The alleged getaway driver, 27-year-old Xavier Guzman, faced charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Guzman was apprehended after police stopped a Toyota Camry believed to have been used in the shooting. A loaded gun found in the vehicle matched the casings and bullets recovered at the crime scene.
The community was deeply shaken by Melissa's death, and her mother issued an emotional statement forgiving the shooter, acknowledging that he too was a victim of the community's failures. The case highlighted the pervasive issue of gang violence in Chicago and the innocent lives it claims.
