Justin O’Brien Gamino, a 21-year-old male from Chicago, IL, was tragically killed on May 16, 2022, in a drive-by shooting in the Englewood neighborhood. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. near the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation, an anti-violence organization. Gamino, who was standing next to a car, was shot multiple times by a gunman in a stolen SUV. Despite efforts by staff members to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Gamino, who was on track to earn his high school diploma and was the father of a 2-year-old girl, had no indications of being armed at the time of the shooting.
The investigation led to the arrest of Isaac Corona, a 25-year-old male who was on parole for a previous gun-related offense. Corona was charged with first-degree murder after being identified as the shooter. His hand tested positive for gunshot residue, and a "ghost gun" was found in the crashed SUV. Corona had a history of criminal activity, including a previous conviction for unlawful use of a weapon and a plea deal that resulted in a reduced sentence for a prior gun felony.
Additionally, Antonio Gonzalez, a 19-year-old male who was out on bond for a stolen vehicle case and a separate gun offense, was charged with attempted murder of a police officer and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Gonzalez was involved in a police chase following the shooting, during which he ran over a police officer, causing significant injuries. He was eventually captured after fleeing on foot into a forest preserve.
The case against Corona and Gonzalez highlights the ongoing issues with gun violence and the criminal justice system in Chicago. Both suspects had prior criminal records and were out on parole or bond at the time of the incident.
