Michael "Gummy" Alon Davis Jr., a 32-year-old African American male from Peoria, Illinois, tragically lost his life on June 28, 2022. Michael was enjoying a summer barbecue with his family when an argument over money escalated into a fatal confrontation. Rev Blakes, a 43-year-old male, arrived at the gathering on a motorized bike and began arguing with Michael. The dispute quickly turned violent, and Blakes pulled out a gun, shooting Michael multiple times. Michael was pronounced dead at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
The investigation into Michael's death led to the arrest of Rev Blakes, who was charged with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. During the trial, Blakes claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that he believed he heard a gunshot and saw Michael approaching him aggressively. However, the prosecution argued that the shooting stemmed from a dispute over missing money, with Blakes confronting Michael at his home and escalating the situation to violence.
On April 5, 2024, a Peoria County jury found Blakes guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 52 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on July 15, 2024.
