Jose Adalid Celis Gonzalez, a 30-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on July 22, 2022, in Chicago, Illinois. Gonzalez was working the overnight service window at the Original Maxwell Street restaurant on the city's west side when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 3:10 a.m. on the 3800 block of W. Harrison Street. The altercation began when Joseph Freeman, a 47-year-old man from Bellwood, Illinois, felt disrespected during an argument with Gonzalez.
Freeman allegedly threatened to return with a gun and 'shoot up the place' after making a gun gesture with his hand. Despite an off-duty police officer's attempt to de-escalate the situation, Freeman left the scene only to return 20 minutes later.
Surveillance footage captured Freeman returning in the same car and wearing the same clothing. He approached the service window, reached inside with a handgun, and fired three shots, one of which struck Gonzalez in the face. Responding officers rushed Gonzalez to Mount Sinai Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Freeman's vehicle was identified through additional surveillance cameras in the vicinity, and he was later apprehended.
The day following the murder, Freeman contacted a long-time friend who is an Illinois State Police trooper, suggesting they needed to talk in person. However, the meeting never took place. Chicago Police showed the trooper videos of the murder, leading to Freeman's identification. Freeman turned himself in to the police on Tuesday and was charged with first-degree murder. He was held without bail. The case highlights the tragic consequences of a seemingly minor altercation escalating into a fatal incident.
