In a quiet Loganville, Georgia neighborhood, the life of 19-year-old Jacquorrius Madison, an African American male, was cut short on the evening of March 11, 2017. Known as 'Corey' to his friends and family, he was remembered as a good kid with a good spirit who had recently started a new job and was enrolled in college. The tragic events unfolded in the swim and tennis area of his subdivision on Grove Lake Street, a place neighbors described as typically peaceful.
Earlier that day, Madison and his best friend had arranged to sell marijuana. The situation escalated into a physical altercation with a group of teenagers they did not know. During the fight, a gunshot rang out, striking Madison in the chest. His friend, Isiah Choppin, desperately tried to save him by applying pressure to the wound and offering words of encouragement. Emergency services were called, and Madison was transported to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Gwinnett County Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide, which they believed was the result of a planned robbery connected to a drug deal. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of three teenage suspects. The day after the shooting, police arrested 17-year-old Terrance Elisha Thornton of Stone Mountain, who they believed drove the getaway car. A second suspect, 17-year-old Joshua Donnell Cook, also from Stone Mountain, was taken into custody the following day.
The final suspect, 18-year-old Corey Leemarce Bryant of Lithonia, turned himself in to the Gwinnett County Jail a few days later. Investigators identified Bryant as the alleged shooter.
