Quardreka Payne, a 32-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on September 29, 2022, in Peoria, Illinois. The circumstances surrounding her death were both violent and heartbreaking. On that fateful day, Quardreka was brutally attacked by her husband, Rickey J. Payne, who was 35 years old at the time. The couple had been arguing early in the morning when Rickey struck Quardreka multiple times in the face with an object, causing severe fractures.
He then proceeded to shoot her three times, including shots to her face and neck. Despite the severity of her injuries, Quardreka was still alive after being shot, as confirmed by a forensic pathologist. The scene was described as gruesome, with a trail of blood throughout the house.
The violence did not end there. Rickey Payne then went upstairs and shot his 8-year-old stepson, Cael Thornton, twice in the head. Cael, who was also African American, was in the same room as Rickey's 15-month-old twins, who fortunately were not harmed. After committing these heinous acts, Rickey attempted to stage the scene to look like a break-in and called 911. However, the evidence against him was overwhelming.
Rickey J. Payne was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the deaths of Quardreka Payne and Cael Thornton. During the trial, which took place in February 2024, the jury took about two and a half hours to find him guilty on both counts. Despite being given the opportunity to speak, Rickey remained silent.
On April 10, 2024, Rickey J. Payne was sentenced to natural life in prison without the possibility of parole. The automatic life sentence was due to the fact that he had killed two people.
