In the early morning hours of Mother's Day, May 10, 2015, a violent altercation outside a nightclub in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan tragically cut short the life of 31-year-old Hispanic male, Ernesto Santiago. The vibrant nightlife scene on Post Avenue turned into one of chaos and bloodshed when a dispute that began near the Tette Club escalated with tragic finality.
Santiago, a resident of the Bronx, found himself in the midst of a brawl that erupted around 4:15 a.m., a confrontation that ultimately led to gunfire.
Responding to the call of two men shot, police arrived to a grim scene. Santiago had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the groin. Alongside him, another man, aged 33, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. Both men were rushed to area hospitals, but for Santiago, medical intervention at Montefiore Medical Center was not enough to save him. The second man was fortunate to be in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital. The sudden violence of the incident sent shockwaves through the community, marking the first homicide of the year in the 34th Precinct.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, there was a flurry of police activity. A vehicle believed to be fleeing the scene was stopped several blocks away, near 218th Street and Broadway.
