The perpetrator, Christian Acevedo, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime, was arrested and charged with the murders of Nathan Billegas and Brandon Perez, as well as the attempted murder of the two other teens. Acevedo, a former student of Benito Juarez Community Academy, had been expelled from the school due to behavioral, academic, and attendance issues. In June 2024, Christian Acevedo was sentenced to 46 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The court proceedings highlighted the delays and challenges faced by the Chicago police during the investigation, including a lack of cooperation from school officials. Despite these obstacles, the evidence against Acevedo was overwhelming, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
